When it comes to upgrading your glassware, you know you need a few basics, like drinking glasses, a pitcher and maybe even a set of wine glasses or whiskey glasses. (And if you’re shopping for those, we recommend this handblown set.) While you’ll be ready to mix an Old Fashioned, try a new mocktail or pour yourself a glass of Knob Creek, you’re going to need a place to set your drink, which is where a reliable, stylish set of coasters comes in. Drink coasters are must-haves if you want to protect your wooden surfaces from any rings or damage, and they’re a great way to help keep your glass in place. Here are a few things to keep an eye on when you’re shopping for the best sets.
What Are the Best Coaster Sets?
It depends where you’re wanting to use them, but, in general, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind for your next set of coffee table coasters.
Material: The best coasters are durable and hold up even after multiple uses. We like cork coasters because they help absorb any moisture or spills, and, most importantly, cork won’t scratch surfaces. Marble or wooden coasters, which look more polished, are also great choices and you can often find ones that incorporate cork in their designs. Whatever the material, just make sure there’s something on the bottom surface to protect the table from scratches and keep it from moving around too much.
Quantity in a Set: Coasters usually come in sets of anywhere between four and eight to a pack, and the number you need is entirely subjective. However we do appreciate a quality coaster set that gives us the most bang for our buck, so we prioritize large sets.
Holder or Storage: A wire or metal rack or caddie holder for your coasters keeps them neat, tidy and all in one place when they’re not actively in use.
Design: Of course, this one’s up to you and the design you prefer most, but for basic all-purpose coasters we tend to favor classic or understated styles that will look at home on your coffee table or other surfaces.
